With the shortened season of 2020 we have all been dreaming of getting away and this month we have an incredible story of sailing in Madagascar. The waters there are challenging, but glorious.

If you do happen to be heading off for an ocean passage, then our offshore planning series continues with vital advice for all skippers.

Our boat test is the boat that veteran circumnavigator Jimmy Cornell, aged 81, is taking around the world again. Jimmy has opted for the Outremer 4E, a boat powered entirely by the sun and wind, with strong ecological credentials and mighty comfortable too. Editor Sam Jefferson finds out how this big cat sails.

If you’re inspired to follow in Jimmy’s wake, then our gear section includes a detailed “buyers’ guide”, on ‘green’ kit and how to keep your own electrical power consumption low.

Forgive us for asking, but at what age you were you a proficient seaman? Aged 15, Timothy Long has sailed solo around Britain. It’s a cracking tale, full of inspiration for sailors of all ages. We also hear the story from mum and dad’s point of view. Here they are at the finish looking proud and possibly quite relieved. Well done Tim!
With the first ever AC75 racing about to start in Auckland, our latest issue looks at the spectacle ahead and we talk in depth to Sir Ben Ainslie about recent developments and what can expect in the World Series, Prada Cup and then the America’s Cup in March next year.

26/09/2020, Saint-Tropez (FRA,83), Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2020, Day 1

The Rules of Sailing are updated every four years and our resident Rules expert Mark Rushall, British Olympic coach and the tactical mastermind of the team’s triumph in Rio four years ago, breaks down what is new and what we need to know.

Each month we bring you the latest new boats, so how about this foiling dinghy for starters? Looks exciting, but handlable. You’ll have to read the magazine to find out more!

For us northern hemisphere sailors the nights are drawing in and if we’re not getting our warmest wetsuits out for a frostbite series – when restrictions allow – then it’s time for some winter maintenance. We look at some of the jobs to consider, for dinghies and yachts.
